The high altitude approach to the Gurudongmar lake lies in India's north Sikkim region, at an altitude of over 17, 000 feet above sea level, after traversing the high Himalayan peaks of Chomiomo and Kanchenjau. These prayer flags lie along a mined area with active and live mines from the Indo-Chinese operation in the region many decades back. A prayer flag is a colorful panel or rectangular cloth often found strung along mountain ridges and peaks high in the Himalayas. There are two kinds of prayer flags: horizontal ones, called lung ta meaning Wind Horse in Tibetan, and the vertical Darchor. Dar translates as to increase life, fortune, health and wealth, Cho translates as all sentient beings.
