Hundreds of tiny Olive Ridley turtle hatchlings looked at sunlight for the first time and entered the Bay of Bengal, helped on their way by scores of eager hands of volunteers on the city beach on Friday early morning. The tiny creatures floundered, stopped and crawled away into the sea and the tides washed them into the Bay. Hundreds of black tiny heads bobbed up and down on the retreating waters near the shore and in due course they swam away heralding the arrival of a new generation of Olive Ridley turtles that return to the coast for laying eggs. The eggs laid by an adult Olive Ridley turtle are shifted to an ex-situ hatchery where they hatch after 45 days.
