Chinese President Jiang Zemin's historic visit to India was marked by violent protests against China's position on Tibet. During his visit, Jiang met his Indian counterpart Shankar Dayal Sharma and prime minister H.D. Deve Gowda. They discussed reductions of border troops - a vestige of the border fought between China and India in 1962. Jiang began talks with Sharma and India's vice-president, K.R. Narayanan, after a 21-gun salute and a 12-minute welcoming ceremony.
