India on April 12, 2000, formally launched the second offer of oil and gas blocks under the new exploration licensing policy (NELP). The government has announced the offer of 25 blocks under NELP II. These include eight deepwater blocks on the West Coast and eight shallow water blocks both on the east (five blocks) and the west coast (three blocks). The offer also includes nine onland blocks with two blocks each in Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal and one block each in Assam, Orissa and Rajasthan. The government had awarded 25 blocks under the first offer of NELP in January and 23 production-sharing contracts were signed on April 12.
