Yemen Blues is a group of nine musicians led by charismatic frontman Ravid Kahalani. Kahalani’s roots are in Yemen, but he’s never been there. His parents are part of a large community of Yemenite Jews living in Israel, having fled Yemen in Operation Magic Carpet after the formation of the new Israeli state. His musical influences range much further than his Yemenite roots though – to American blues, soul, West African music, opera and European classical music. These diverse roots are augmented by the band’s co-founder, Omer Avital. Avital is also Jewish but with Moroccan and Yemenite heritage and extensive jazz roots, having played with Wynton Marsalis, Brian Blade, Joshua Redman and others.
