A broad and mildly sloping Ganga river valley in middle Garhwal leads to the upper Alaknanda Ganga valley village regions of Wan and further up to Joshimath. The rich golden rice paddies in the fields are ready for harvest and the monsoon has taken a back seat, so the skies are clear, rainfall is altogether absent in this early October period, in the brief autumn before winter sets in. In these lower altitudes, villages, roads and cultivation make up the land use along the state highway leading to Badrinath and Kedarnath temples along the Char Dham Yatra route.
