A fabulous aerial view of Lacustrine deposits in the Spiti valley. These are sedimentary rock formations found at the bottom of ancient glacial source lakes that could also have been crater lakes. Very similar to the Lacustrine deposits of Lamayuru in Ladakh, the soil largely comprises of silk and clay, and also has carbonates in it. However, it is almost entirely devoid of vegetation and any surface rain water rapidly flows off it, leading to the formation of channels and flutings that further wear down the soil surface. There is a possibility of coal deposits being found in such Lacustrine deposits. Kashmir has coal in similar deposits. Help us identify this formation more accurately.
