Manipur Governor V Shanmiganathan inaugurates Sangai Festival 2015 at the Bheigyachandra Open Air Theatre, Hapta Kangjeibung, Manipur. The inaugural function was also attended by Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh, Royal Norwegian Embassy, New Delhi Ambassador Nils Ragnar Kamsvag, Deputy Chief Minister Gaikhangam and Parliamentary Secretary (Tourism/YAS) Mairembam Prithiviraj Singh as president, special guest and guests of honour respectively. The Sangai Festival, previously known as the Tourism festival, was renamed in 2010. The state animal of Manipur, the Sangai Deer, being the inspiration for the name. The deer’s name “Sangai” was encouraged due to its peculiar posture and behavior while running. This Sangai, rare and only found in Manipur, bears resemblance to species found in Thailan
