A Maharashtrian man lights diyas or lamps in this residence in Delhi for the festival of Ganesh Chaturthi. Ganesh Chaturthi is a ten- day long festival celebrated in India to commemorate Lord Ganpati's Birthday, the son of Lord Shiva, the Destroyer. The festival is colourful and celebrated with enthusiasm in the country and with extra-ordinary zeal in Maharashtra. Diyas are being lighted before starting of the Ganpati Puja (Worship) . Lighting Diyas or Lamps are customary before starting of any Hindu religious ceremony. Lighting lamps symbolise an auspicious beginning.
