Flying over Guwahati, the gateway to the Northeast, and the largest and most cosmopolitan city in the region. Guwahati, the former capital of Assam has a rich history dating back to 6th century AD and it was earlier known as ‘Pragiyotishpura’. Situated on the banks of the river Brahmaputra, this city is also the most developed and important city of not only Assam but also North East India. The name Guwahati is comes from two Assamese words: ‘guwa’ (betel nut) and ‘haat’ (market place). Dispur, the capital of Assam is a locality in the city and is the seat of the Government of Assam. The Assam Secretariat building is located in Dispur along with the Assam Assembly House and the State Emergency Operations Centre.
