28th International Film Festival of India was inaugurated by the Chief Minister of Kerala Mr E.K. Narayanan amidst traditional pomp and pageantry in Thiruvananthapuram in 1997. Most of the commercial film industry, however, stayed away from the ceremony due to a boycott call given by the film federation of India. The renowned Australian filmmaker Paul Cox was already in town as was Miguel Littín whose films are being featured in the retrospective section. The section also includes a collection of works of the Polish director Krzysztof Kieslowski and Iranian director Mohsen Makhmalbaf. The Indian panorama consists of 14 films and is in the middle of controversy due to the non-inclusion of a number of films some of which are national award from 1996.
