Before summer singes everything and ripens the wheat crop to a golden-brown, the young wheat crop in these central Indian fields is a rich green in colour. The fields are well watered from a canal that comes from the Yamuna river into the fields in this part of Uttar Pradesh bordering on Madhya Pradesh. Wheat is the chief grain of India next to rice which is neck to neck in terms of consumption. Wheat fields stretch to as far as the eye can see, broken only by the yellow of rapeseed and mustard or sarsoan.
