Amidst rain and a sea of people, participants wearing saffron turbans and with with huge decorated wooden shields as their only protection from a shower of stones, arrive with great enthusiasm at the venue of Bagwal Mela. Jumping and shouting ensue as they anticipate the game of Bagwal. Bagwal Mela is held on the day of Raksha Bandhan, a festival which celebrates the bond between siblings. The Bagwal Mela can be considered as a strange festival with its game of pelting stones. The Bagwal game involves the participation of four communities. Two teams at the opposite end of each other throw stones at each other. They use wooden shields to protect themselves from the small pebbles coming their way.
