The Penlop of Trongsa sat at this fortified dzong or fortress and later became the First King of Bhutan. Trongsa in central Bhutan is thus an important seat of power. This huge and imposing fortress lies below the road leading to the central valley of Bumthang. Lots of fresh construction is taking place across Bhutan, including in Tongsa. Lots of fruit orchards surround the township and fresh road-making has damaged the mountains and forests, mostly because of the Mangdechhu hydro power project.
