The Shanggoi is the out house normally built in association with the yumjao to serve different purposes such as gathering of people during ritual ceremonies and social occasions, storing of household items like basketry, pottery, agricultural implements, etc. and where the woman usually weave clothes on loin loom and fly-shuttle looms during the leisure times. In Meitei society, the traditional Yumjao house is symbolic of status in society. Individuals possessing wealth could construct the yumjao which necessitated procuring is observed with 'yum-thangkaba' ritual feating. Construction of Yumjao is based on the treatise Yumsharol.
