How strange to see hot-house variety hybrid orchids with snow and a cold Himalayan lake in the backdrop - hardly an environment in which orchids would thrive! And yet - here is a Himalayan lake in the Sikkim winter with orchids brought outdoors. Unusual shots of hot-house garden orchids with snow in the background. Amazing contrast between whites and greys in the mountains, snow and sky and the colourful orchids. The primary characteristics that distinguish the orchids as a group are found in the flower. At the bottom of an unspecialized non-orchid flower is the stem that supports it, called the pedicel.
