The Varanus Monitor Lizard of India is often killed as a lucky charm, and for use in medicine. Its numbers are expectedly coming down, as a result. There is also a silly superstition that is working against it - that the biskhopra as it is also known (and go or gor pittha) is dangerous and poisonous, which IT IS NOT. It is a thoroughly harmless reptile that is part of our drier eco-systems. Of course, Shivaji is said to have scaled a fortress wall by latching on to a Monitor Lizard! This Monitor is just in plain winter laziness mode, and is intent on taking in some warmth from the wan sunshine!
