The Dehra dun your parents told you about was a lush green terai valley of basmati rice fields, forests, shooting blocks, streams (with quaint names such as the Song and Suswa!), elephants and tigers, and the Doon and Welham's! Now rice fields there are no more, and far from the fragrance of basmati, you get to take in diesel fumes from generators, trucks and buses, traffic jams, and the most intense urbanisation and dense housing and commercial developments tightly packed together.
