This rare archival footage from Lumbini, Nepal—the sacred birthplace of Gautama Buddha—captures an important oral testimony from a local priest (pujari) dressed in traditional Kasaya robes. Presented by WildFilms India, this historical recording preserves valuable insights about the evolution of the Maya Devi Temple, a revered UNESCO World Heritage Site. In this video, the priest introduces himself and recounts how, about 13 years prior, Lumbini looked very different. He explains that at the site where the temple now stands, there once existed an older Maya Devi shrine along with a sacred Peepal (Sacred Fig) tree, worshipped by local devotees for generations.
