ALI SARDAR JAFRI Noted Urdu poet and Gyan Peeth awardee, Ali Sardar Jafri died on the 1st of August 2000, following a protracted illness. He was 86, born in Uttar Pradesh, the poet was a crusader against imperialism and exploitation. Jafri was one of the most prominent activist of the progressive writers movement who worked for the resurgence of Urdu Literature. Jafri began his career with a collection of stories 'Manzil' in 1938 and made a mark as a poet with 'Parvaz' in 1943. LALA AMARNATH The First cricket captain of Free India, Lala Amarnath died on the 5th of August 2000 after a prolonged illness. Born in the princely state of Kapurthala, Lala made his test debut in Bombay against the English in 1933-1934. Lala Amarnath played for India in 24 tests including 15 as captain. This footag
