The Fort-Royal, on Sainte-Marguerite's Island, became a state prison in 1685 and played host to the legendary Man in the Iron Mask. Vauban was responsible for its final appearance. One should visit this in order to experience underwater archaeology as there is a large collection of old Roman antiques, amphorae and pottery from a ship-wreck.
