Guwahati in ancient Assam, and formerly known as Gauhati in modern era, is a metropolis, the largest city of Assam in India and ancient urban area and now largest metropolitan area in north-eastern India. It is said to be the "Gateway" of the North East Region. Dispur, the capital of the Indian state of Assam is located within the city and is the seat of the Government of Assam. Guwahati formerly Prāgjyotishpura meaning City of Eastern Light and other view is Prāg meaning former or eastern and jyotish meaning a star, astrology, shining the numerically predominant caste of the province as well as its "enlightened and advanced community" , was the capital of ancient state of Kamarupa. The city has many ancient hindu
