Women labourers work on hard manual labour and construction work to create a stepped sit-out near the ugly sprouts near AIIMS, toiling in the hot summer sun of New Delhi. The first shot is telling in that the four women are working hard and a man is just observing them, in a shot that looks poorly at the state of women in India. But then the man also busies himself with moving a cement sewage pipe, with the aid of another labourer. It is sad that in the New India women must labour in the summer sun to earn a pathetic daily wage in order to sustain their families. Or should we be rejoicing at the equality that one sees in women working next to men, in earning their bread...? Tough call.
