The courtship, mating, and egg-laying behaviour of two damselfly species near a pond. A pair of Black Marsh Darts (Onychargia atrocyana) forms a heart-shaped mating wheel on a broad green leaf, with the male clasping the female behind her head as she bends her abdomen forward. A pair of Coromandel Marsh Darts (Ceriagrion coromandelianum), identifiable by their yellow-orange bodies and green heads, hang in tandem from a grass stem. The female lays eggs on a floating leaf while the male remains attached above her. This behaviour allows the male to maintain contact with the female during egg-laying and may help reduce interference from rival males. The close-up captures the reproductive behaviour of these small damselflies in a pond-side habitat.
