If one event gives Calcutta's cultural scene its dominating motive, it is the Durga Pooja festival. In reality, this pooja should be called a religious ritual yet so pervasive is its influence. So spontaneous is the participation of all communities, it can be dubbed as the biggest cultural act of Calcutta. Aparna Sen says "Durga pooja is our main Bengali festival and that something that everyone shares whether they are Muslims, Christians or the Brahmos. I am a Brahmo but I use to equally participate in the Durga Pooja of the Pada when I was a child so that's a very unifying factor."
