Not customary idol worship, devotees gather to offer prayings to the Sun god

Devotees, both men and women gather in the ghats to pray and make offerings to the sun god and his sister. Thalis or plates loaded with fruits, vegetables, garlands people pray and make wishes to the gods. Applying vermillion on their heads and clad in traditional sarees women pray to the god. Earthen lamps are lit. Hundreds of people are seen taking part in the traditional festival that dates back to the ancient Vedic time. Chhath puja is performed on Kartika Shukla Shashthi, which is the sixth day of the month of Kartika in the Vikram Samvat. This falls typically in the month of October or November in the Gregorian English Calendar. It is also celebrated in the month of Chaitra.
