Philip Glass says "At a certain moment Indian classical was very important for me. I was 28 years old, finishing my studies in Paris, it happened that year that I was hired by chance to work with Ravi Shankar as his assistant. Until then I didn't know anything about Indian music, that was my very first time with him and I was very impressed particularly by the variety of the rhythmic instructions he gave. In the west, we talk about the arms of music being melody, harmony and rhythm." Through his operas, his symphonies, his compositions for his own ensemble, and his wide-ranging collaborations with artists ranging from Twyla Tharp to Allen Ginsberg, Woody Allen to David Bowie, Philip Glass has had an extraordinary and unprecedented impact upon the musical and intellectual life of his times.
