Dev Benegal says "Well I wanted to make a film about the generation I was familiar with. When I read the book, it reminded me about several experiences that I myself had gone through while I was making documentaries. It was talking about the problems of a generation in India which was quite out of sync with Indian reality so I felt that it would make a good film. Well, the book is a very difficult book as everything happens in the mind of the protagonist Agasthya Singh. When I mentioned this to a lot of people and when they heard they said it is difficult to make this film. It was very difficult but the answer in that was to find the right cinematic equivalent to coney what's happening in the mind of the protagonist." Dev Benegal grew up in the cinema theatres of Delhi on a diet of America
