“‘Uttam Wagekar’ is a title. It is given to an artist who has proficiency in at least four or five disciplines among the various branches of fine arts—such as singing, instrumental music, dance, literature, and painting. Such a person can be called an ‘Uttam Wagekar.’ In the name of my गुरुजी, Pandit Jiya Lal Vasant ji, we organize this every year. It has been seven years now. The first person we felicitated with this award was Pandit Jasraj. After that, we honored Shiv ji, Hari ji, and most recently Lata Mangeshkar. This year, we have presented the award to Hema Malini. We constantly think of new ideas, keeping in mind the direction in which the new generation is moving, and consider what more we can develop accordingly.”
