A red and black blister beetle clinging to a cluster of green flower buds and feeding on one of them. Its contrasting banded wing covers stand out against the green plant as it chews into the bud. Blister beetles commonly feed on flowers, buds, and other plant tissues. Some species produce cantharidin, a defensive chemical that can irritate human skin, so they are best observed without handling.
