Paan or pan leaf cultivation in Bangladesh. The Bengalis love eating paan, clearly, so there is much domestic demand. The creepers are grown in neat rows, with support for them to climb. Paan (from Sanskrit par á "leaf"; cognate with English fern) is a preparation combining betel leaf with areca nut widely consumed throughout Southeast Asia, East Asia (mainly Taiwan), and the Indian subcontinent. It is chewed for its stimulant and psychoactive effects. The betel (Piper betle) is a vine of the family Piperaceae, which includes pepper and kava. Betel leaf is mostly consumed in Asia, and elsewhere in the world by some Asian emigrants, as betel quid or in paan, with Areca nut and/or tobacco.
