This rare nighttime footage captures an endangered Olive Ridley Sea Turtle nesting along the coastline of Odisha, one of the world’s most important mass nesting regions for the species. Under the cover of darkness, the sea turtle slowly moves across the sandy beach before carefully using its powerful hind flippers to dig a deep nesting chamber in the sand. The laborious digging process is part of the turtle’s vital reproductive behaviour, allowing it to safely deposit and protect its clutch of eggs from predators and tidal disturbances.
