The Kargil War was fought for more than 60 days, primarily in the Kargil sector of Jammu and Kashmir between India and Pakistan. Both sides lost many soldiers and the war came to an end on July 26, 1999, when India fought and took command of the outposts that had been lost to Pakistani intruders, and Pakistan retreated after international diplomatic pressure. The Government of India recruited approximately 200,000 Indian troops to fight. A total number of 527 soldiers of the Indian Armed forces lost their lives during this war. The Kargil Vijay Diwas is held in honour of the slain soldiers. Kargil War Memorial in Dras, built by the Indian army in the late '90s, is frequented by travellers plying the highway connecting Srinagar to Leh.
