You see the bluish tinge of the ice? That is ancient ice, uncovered to the air for the first time in thousands of years, as the glacier melts its way down, uncovering fresh ice as it goes... Samples taken from the core of the ice contain oxygen from that period, and pollution, oxygen, air and other bacterial and fungal particulate matter from that time can be judged as such... Gomukh is mentioned in the Puranas. It is said there that searching a lost sheep a shepherd boy reached near a glacier in Gangotri, the snout of which exactly looked like the mouth of a cow, and thus it got its name 'Gomukh'.
