Rice paddies are cultivated in step cultivation form in the Himalaya. The rice fields are stepped down the hillside, with each field a foot or so lower so that the steepness of the hill is tamed and water can flow evenly from one field to the next one, by gravity flow. A broad and mildly sloping Ganga river valley in middle Garhwal leads to the upper Alaknanda Ganga valley village regions of Wan and further up to Joshimath. The rich golden rice paddies in the fields are ready for harvest and the monsoon has taken a back seat, so the skies are clear, rainfall is altogether absent in this early October period, in the brief autumn before winter sets in.
