Shiva was married to Sati. Sati was the daughter of Daksha, the son of Brahma. Daksha was organizing a huge fire ceremony where he invited all the gods excluding Shiva and Sati. Sati went to Shiva and informed him of the grand ceremony her father was organizing. Not withstanding the prevention of Shiva, she went to the ceremony. After she arrived at the ceremony Daksha started speaking offensively about Shiva. Sati became very upset on hearing the insult of her husband and the fact that none of the Gods present at the ceremony was defending him. As a result of which she jumped into the fire. On hearing this Shiva became very angry. He opened the locks of his hair and gave birth to two demons. They went inside and killed everybody.
