The nations highest civilian honor Bharat Ratna being awarded inside the Rashtrapati Bhawan while Carnatic singer Madurai Shanmukhavadivu Subbulakshmi and Rocket Scientist Abdul Kalam were present on the ceremony. The award to celluloid Master Satyajit Ray was collected by his son Sandeep Ray. Other recipients included Gulzarilal Nanda two time former caretaker Prime Minister and noted freedom fighter Aruna Asaf Ali.
