Women in blue burkas beg from a taxi driver at a market in Kabul. Afghanistan is one of the most challenging places in the world to be a woman. Only 40% of Afghan girls attend elementary school, and only one in 20 girls attend school beyond the sixth grade. Despite a flood of billions of dollars in aid provided by the international community following the fall of the Taliban in late 2001, many Afghans are still employed in low-wage jobs as many others travel to neighbouring Iran for labouring jobs.
