The festival of Durga Puja starts with Mahalaya, the first phase of the waxing moon in Aswin. The ritual begins with few from the community offering prayers to their ancestors at the city's riverbanks or sacred ponds, a ritual called Tarpana. In this case, the Oriya community in Delhi went to the sacred pond of Gorakhnath Mandir for the Kalash filling ceremony. The puja rituals are long and very detailed and complicated. The great Mother as the ten-handed Durga is believed to come down from her husbands home on Mount Kailash to her parents' abode on the Himalayas every year for three days, tile 7th, 8th and 9th days of the bright fortnight in the month of Aswina.
