Even today, Bhutan is the land of deep spirituality. The arts, for example, give expression to religious beliefs and spirituality. Paintings on statues, on the wall or on banners known as Thangkas showing holy figures. Bhutan's varied musical forms are also dominated by religious undercurrents. Some were exclusively developed to be performed at religious ceremonies. In 1984, a 9 member council was established in Bhutan for political affairs to meet the needs of the monk body and to facilitate various religious institutions in the country. The fourth king of Bhutan also had a plan for the smooth running of big Dzongs and other religious buildings.
