A herd of spotted deer or Chital (Axis axis) graze in lush green grass near a stream. The deers have come out of a dip in the stream in the hot sun and are drying themselves. The herd includes females, fawns, juvenile males with their velvety antlers and grown males with hard antlers. The species exhibit sexual dimorphism and the antlers are absent in the females. They graze in herds and it is also a protective behavior against predators. Spotted deers prefer soft shoots and browse on foliage, herbs, shrubs in the dry season.
