On being asked by a reporter about the Gujaratis residing around the world, the then CM of Gujarat, Narendra Modi replies saying 'recently a function was commemorated for the Gujarati residents and the ones staying abroad which brought a feeling of unity amongst them all'. The first-ever Pravasi Bhartiya Diwas was held in 2003 from 9th January to 11th. Every year the day 9th January commemorates as the day when Mahatma Gandhi came to India for the first time from South Africa.
