SL Rao: "There were economic reasons and there were political reasons. I think the economic reasons were pretty clear. There was a feeling that certain sectors in the economy were being denied credit. Agriculture was one, small scale industry was another. There was a need for much more money being available for export and therefore it was felt that nationalisation of banks would enable
