Close on the heels of the mass deaths of whales on a Tamil Nadu beach, over 300 Olive Ridley turtles and a dolphin were found dead along the Puri beach. Though carcasses of Olive Ridley turtles are usually washed ashore on Puri beach during winter, this was the first time such a large number of sea turtles perished in Puri. They come in large numbers to the Odisha coast for their annual nesting. Sources said the turtles might have been killed by trawlers operating illegally in the sea. Meanwhile, renowned sand artist Sudarsan Pattnaik has created a sand sculpture of turtles with message “Give us space to live” at Puri beach. “Today I found hundreds of dead turtles at Puri beach.
