Kundra and Shetty invested in the team through an offshore company in Mauritius. Shetty said that Kundra's idea to invest was smart because of cricket's popularity around the world. Kundra called the team a "Valentine's Day gift" for Shetty. Kundra and Shilpa Shetty co-owned the Rajasthan Royals in the Indian Premier League (IPL) in 2009 but gave up their stake in 2015. Kundra's involvement in the IPL corruption scandal led to him giving up his stake in the team. In 2015, the Supreme Court of India imposed a life ban on him from any cricket-related activity.
