Among the unusual customs one encounters at a Hindu wedding is that of a necklace made of currency notes, often worn by the groom or a family member. In this case, the greenish Twenty Indian Rupee note is strung together to make the mala or haar that is worn around the neck, as an offering. The women also have gifts atop their heads. The bride's mother carries a thali for the arati, with lit diyas on it. The mother of the bride places tilak or tika smears of red on the foreheads of the groom's family, to welcome them to the venue of the wedding.
