The festival is celebrated by worshipping Goddess Durga who symbolizes positive energy, known as the divine force, and feminine power that is used against the negative forces of the evil. She protects her devotees from these evil forces. She is known for having both creative and destructive powers. She is worshipped for killing Mahishasur, a powerful demon who was also known as the Buffalo Demon. The Durga Puja festival marks her return every year in the Bengali month of Ashwin, which falls in mid-September to mid-October. According to mythological stories, Goddess Durga spends the whole year caring for her husband, Lord Shiva, in the Himalayas.
