Pongal celebrations 2014 at Tamil Nadu House, New Delhi. Festival of Pongal is celebrated on 14 January to mark the start of sun's six-month long journey northwards (Uttarayana). The festival is mostly celebrated in the southern part on India and on this day, rice known as 'Pongal' is cooked. There are two varieties of pongal, namely, sakarai pongal (sweet pongal) and ven. Sakarai pongal is generally prepared in temples as a prasadam. This type of pongal is prevalent in pongal festivals such as (Thai Pongal) in Tamil Nadu. According to the rituals, sweet rice known as 'Pongal' is cooked in a new earthenware pot called 'Pongapani' and is placed where the puja is to be performed.
