All four of the Char Dham Yatras of Uttarakhand start from Haridwar. From Haridwar, one can access Gangotri via Rishikesh and Devprayag, the confluence of Alaknanda and Bhagirathi. The route to Gangotri via the small town of Harsil and past Bhairon Ghati provides spectacular Himalayan vistas. Situated approximately 3,140 meters above sea level, the Gangotri temple is built near the rock where King Bhagirath purportedly worshipped Lord Shiva and is the original source of the Ganges, which has now receded to Gaumukh. The Ganga has two main head sources: The Bhagirathi and the Alkanand. The Gangotri Temple was originally built in the early 18th Century by Gorkhali miltary General Amar Singh Thapa.
