Aerial view of old lighthouse and Mahishasuramardini cave temple in Mahabalipuram in Tamil Nadu. The old lighthouse is named as Olakaneswara, which means the flame eyed Shiva was built around 640 AD by Pallava king Mahendra. Mamallapuram, which was one of the major ports during Pallava dynasty, used log fire on the high rocks to serve as beacon for the vessels approaching the port at night. The ancient lighthouse is now a protected monument, maintained by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI). In ancient times the log fire on one of the high rocks used to serve as a beacon for the vessels approaching to Mahabalipuram port during the night. The British established the first conventional lighthouse by placing a wick lamp inside 4th order optic and lantern on the roof of Olakkaneeswar Temp
